How to Play "Aria Math" from Minecraft on the Piano (Step-by-Step Guide)

If you’ve spent any time exploring the endless worlds of Minecraft, you already know how powerful its soundtrack is. Composed by C418, the music is atmospheric, nostalgic, and incredibly peaceful. One of the standout tracks that students always ask us about here at NUVO Music School is the beautiful tune "Aria Math."

While it sounds rich and complex, it is actually built on a brilliant, repeating pattern that is perfect for late-beginner to intermediate pianists.

Grab a seat at your keyboard, and let’s break it down step-by-step!

1. The Right-Hand Pattern

The magic of this piece lies in a single 8-note pattern that repeats throughout the section. Once you get this under your fingers, you’ve mastered the right hand!

To find your starting note, look for Middle C, go up to Treble C, and drop down just one note to the B right below it.

The sequence goes like this:

  1. Start on B

  2. Leap up to E

  3. Drop down an octave to Low E

  4. Come right back up to B

  5. Drop back down to Low E

  6. Finish the phrase with: G – C – B – G

Practice Tip: Try saying the notes out loud as you play them slowly: “B, High E, Low E, B, Low E, G, C, B, G.” Repeat this pattern four times until your fingers move smoothly without hesitating.

2. The Left-Hand Bass Notes

While your right hand handles the moving melody, your left hand is going to ground the piece with four simple bass notes.

The progression is: E ➔ G ➔ D ➔ C

  • If you have larger hands: Play these as full octaves to give the song that deep, resonant, ambient sound.

  • If you have smaller hands or are a piano beginner : Playing them as single notes sounds just as beautiful and lets you focus on timing.

3. Putting Both Hands Together

Putting a rolling right-hand melody together with a left-hand bass line can feel tricky at first, but "Aria Math" keeps it straightforward.

The secret is that the hands don't play competing rhythms. Instead, your left hand simply strikes its bass note and holds it, while your right hand plays the entire 8-note pattern on top of it.

  • Play E in the bass ➔ Play the full right-hand pattern.

  • Switch to G in the bass ➔ Play the full right-hand pattern.

  • Switch to D in the bass ➔ Play the full right-hand pattern.

  • Switch to C in the bass ➔ Play the full right-hand pattern.

Take it slow, let the notes breathe, and focus on a steady rhythm. Before you know it, you’ll be creating that iconic Minecraft atmosphere right in your own living room.
